Youth Development Grants
In Central Harlem, unemployment for youth between the ages of 16 and 19 is higher than 50 percent. In addition, funding for youth employment has been cut. Through the Youth Organizing Project, Action for Community Empowerment (ACE) is waging two campaigns: The Youth to Work Experience Project campaign is an effort to get local and city businesses to designate jobs for local youth. The Impact on Drugs campaign is an effort to prevent drug use and sale in their neighborhoods. ACE received a $20,000 grant in support of this project.

Youth Development Grants
Last year, ACE's Harlem Youth in Action (HYA) launched the Youth to Work Experience Project, a campaign to increase the number of employment opportunities for Harlem youth. HYA members wrote letters, met with local political leaders, and served on a local Council member's youth task force. The local Assembly member agreed to broker meetings with the local chamber of commerce and the Harlem Business Alliance, and to create a 24-hour kiosk in the local state building to provide youth information on jobs, trainings, and advanced education. HYA also is part of a coalition that advocates for the need for a permanent summer employment program. ACE received a $25,000 renewal grant to engage 12-15 young people (ages 13-21) in efforts to build on this campaign

Youth Development Grants
In 2001, the Albany Park Neighborhood Council began Project Y, a youth-led organizing project that engaged local youth in organizing campaigns around specific issues. Since then Project Y has developed a core of 25 youth leaders and a membership base of 125 youth, successfully organized their base to press for the adoption of Youth Bill of Rights by the local police commander emphasizing the freedom from police harassment due to immigrant status, secured commitments from the Chicago Public School system for improved safety measures at a local high school and joining with a statewide organizing initiative that won the passage of legislation enabling undocumented students to pay in-state tuition at local public colleges and universities. Albany Park Neighborhood Council received a renewal grant of $30,000 to enable Project Y to involve 250 youth in local projects to increase school safety, improve community police relations and expand access to higher education for immigrant students.
