Public Education Grants
Social Justice Leadership (SJL) was established five years ago by several experienced organizers who believed that the previous models of organizational structure and culture prevalent in the field did not support the healthy development of individuals and organizations. SJL founding organizers sought to create a new model for effective community organization that is values driven, reflective, uncompromising on results and has a perspective on social change that is collaborative, strategic and long-term in its outlook. Over the past five years, SJL has implemented three core training and support programs in New York City, launched a movement-building collective training program with thirteen organizations in NYC and initiated a leadership training program with six to eight organizations in South Florida. With a one-year $30,000 grant from Hazen, SJL will implement the Transformative Organizing Initiative (TOI), which will integrate the three existing training programs into a single movement building training program to reach through all levels of an organization’s staff and membership.
