In New York City public schools, a student’s educational outcomes and opportunity to learn are statistically more determined by where he or she lives than their abilities, according to a new report, A Rotting Apple: Education Redlining in New York City, released today by the Schott Foundation for Public Education
YES, the youth arm of Voces de la Frontera, is a youth-led social justice group that struggles for student, immigrant and worker rights and is made up of 500 students in 15 schools. YES leaders from Milwaukee and Racine united to create a document that will guarantee students the education we deserve: the Student Bill of Rights. It contains six different sections: Student Power and Voice, School and Classroom Environment, Bilingual Education, Freedom from Discrimination, Security and Discipline and Life After School.
Student activists and elected officials will launch a petition drive Monday calling on Mayor Emanuel to reverse his support for extreme disciplinary policies that they say are ineffective and force kids out of school and onto the streets.
