Education cuts are targeting low-income students of color, particularly students from Milwaukee and Racine's rapidly growing Latino community. My school, ALAS High School, is the only completely bilingual school within the whole state. As our resources continue to be cut, we are constantly fighting just to keep our school open.
The students of Youth Empowered in the Struggle (YES) refuse to stand back and watch our education crumble. YES, the youth arm of Voces de la Frontera, is a youth-led social justice group that struggles for student, immigrant and worker rights and is made up of 500 students in 15 schools. YES leaders from Milwaukee and Racine united to create a document that will guarantee students the education we deserve: the Student Bill of Rights.
